KOREAN MUSIC: Lee Hayi of SBS’s “K-Pop Star” (12)

케이팝 스타: 이하이 (Lee Hayi, or Lee Ha Yi)

I know why Hayi didn’t win the final.  It’s all my fault.  I jinxed her.  Jo Mungeun, John Park, Lee Taekwon, Busker Busker, and Bae Sujeong.  As some of you may know by now, this is a long list of runner-ups at the previous Korean singing competitions and as most of you may not know, I rooted for them to win.  Now Hayi is a new addition to the list.

But I’ll tell you what. I kind of already knew that Hayi was not going to win as her voice is not cut out for a singing competition where high-pitched, sometimes overpowering voices (or singers’ ability to sing notes in a very high register) are favored and wowed by the viewers and audience.  We’ve already seen it before when the likes of Lee Sora, Jo Gyuchan, and Jeong Yeop were eliminated from the Naneun Gasuda or NAGASU (나는 가수다, “I Am a Singer”) or when Bobby Kim and Lee Hyunwoo were underappreciated by the NAGASU audience and viewers.  All those are more understated singers than others featured on the show.  They all failed to make the viewers’ and audience get goosebumps by hitting overpoweringly high notes. That’s the downside of singing competitions and music is not a competition. So I think it’s already a miracle that Hayi has come this far, that she’s brought us this far spellbound.

And in this vein, I think Hayi chose the wrong song.  I know Roberta Flack is such a great singer and her song, “Killing Me Softly with His Song” (1973) was a number one hit and has been remade so many times until now.  But honestly, I never listen to this song without getting bored to tears.  It's always like the singer's killing me softly with her song (in a negative sense).  I know it's all a matter of personal preference or taste, but it’s obvious it failed to showcase her one-of-a-kind talent tonight especially when Park Jimin chose to sing Lim Jeong Hee’s “Music Is My Life.”  I know there’s no use to say what if's but I wonder what'd have happened if Hayi had chosen a Korean song that touches the Korean audience’s heart to the deepest.

And here's one more thing:  Given that Lim Jeong Hee’s “Music Is My Life” sampled Diana Ross’s 1970 hit, “Ain't No Mountain High Enough,” all four songs sung by Hayi and Jimin are “Pop Songs” (American/British popular music). Therefore I think it's a legitimate criticism from the show’s fans that they should rename it “Pop Star,” not “K-pop Star.”  It’s like David Cook and David Archuleta singing all Korean songs in the American Idol final.

Even though it’s true that we live in a “Winner-Take-All” world, I don’t think it’s true in this case.  For both Hayi and Jimin can be winners in the long run.  And looking on the bright side, it may indeed be Hayi’s career blessing in disguise.  And I wish her all the best!

Lee Hayi:  "K-Pop Star" Final  (aired on 04/29/2012)
Roberta Flack: "Killing Me Softly with His Song"

Here’s what the judges said:

Park Jin Young (or Park Jinyeong):  I would give Hayi 100 points for (up to) the first 16 bars of the song.  But she lost concentration and emotion in the middle of the song while ad-libbing the part without lyrics (humming along to the tune).  A singer should be able to express emotions without lyrics too, but she failed to do it, which broke her concentration.  So I averaged her points between the best (beginning) part and the worst (ending) part.  (94 out of 100)

BoA:  Hayi’s voice has such a captivating power to it that sweeps over the audience.  Her voice has such a bewitching power but as JYP just commented, if she really wants to be more expressive and wants to thrill the audience with better performances, then she needs to  work more on body language (like hand gestures) and she needs to sing like she means it (just like an actress).  I want her to sing more carried away by enthusiasm. (98 out of 100)

Yang Hyun Suk (or Yang Hyeonseok): Honestly, I like this song the most of all songs Hayi has picked so far for she didn’t really need to sing high notes that she’s been having trouble with.  The Korean audience has a tendency to consider a person with high-pitched voice a good singer, but the reason why we, all three judges, keep praising Hayi is….  I wonder who else, I mean, among any professional singers in Korea, can sing this song as well as her.  I felt really great (listening to her singing) and I told you I would be very generous with the scoring today. I don’t care if I get bashed (for this).  (99 out of 100)

Lee Hayi:  "K-Pop Star" Final (aired on 04/29/2012)
Adele: "Rolling in the Deep"

Yang Hyun Suk (or Yang Hyeonseok):  I didn’t wear headphones while other two judges wore them to hear everything, so I might be wrong.  But Hayi amazed me with this rearrangement of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” that created a style that was strictly her own and also with her perfect rendition of the song, including such numerous ad-libs, totally in tune from the beginning till the end.  On the other hand, Park Jimin demonstrated off-key flubbing here and there singing Lim Jeong Hee’s “Music Is my Life.”  Well, again, I might have heard it wrong, but any way, I really appreciate her singing.  I didn’t know (until now) Adele’s song could be interpreted and rendered this way.   (99 out of 100)

Park Jin Young (or Park Jinyeong):  This time, Hayi expressed definitely more of her feelings in this song and didn’t lose it all along.  I really appreciated it.  But we don’t always need to hit the high notes to get to the climax of the song; we can build to a climax by expressing emotions or changing tones. Just like Hayi and me did while practicing together to use different types of tones for the song, “Mercy.”  This is the problem that lies ahead of her.  She has to solve it by practicing; she needs to learn how to reach the climax of the song and how to create a thrilling sensation for the song.  (96 out of 100)

BoA:  I coached Jimin when she was practicing this song (for the competition).  When I heard Hayi was going to sing this song, I expected she would sing just like Adele because their vocal tones are quite similar.  While listening to her singing the song, however, I was never reminded of the original singer, not to mention Jimin.  And I never thought Hayi would nail the high notes this solidly.  Today is the final and I think she deserves this score. (100 out of 100)

Finally, here’s Hayi’s final runner-up’s speech:  I feel so good ‘cause I don’t need to feel under pressure any more.  I also have felt like crying but tried really hard to hold back my tears.  At last it all ended, so I’m feeling bittersweet.  I feel so relieved.

Yang Hyun Suk (or Yang Hyeonseok):  Even though Hayi placed second tonight, she’s the number one in my heart.  Cheer up, Hayi!

  1. onsemio, i read in some website, they said that the second place, one of the three judges have to pick her under their company. I don't know it is correct not. Hopefully, it right that hayi could end up in one the three big company. Please clarify this infor

  2. It's going to be weird not adding a new song from Hayi to my itunes every week. She looked calm, but when the credits started rolling, I saw a glimpse of her face and it looked like she was having a breakdown. I feel sorry for her, but I'm sure that YG is ready and more than willing to cast her into his company. I am going to miss the show and Hayi. I am not a person who gets all religious about music but Hayi is the first person to make me think "hurry up and come out with an album and continue to come out with more albums!" I tried searching for other "soul" singers, thinking that I could find someone that will captivate me in the same way as Hayi but I couldn't find anyone even close. There is something about her singing (perhaps it's the way she drags notes around so smoothly) that thrills me. Her rendition of "rolling in the deep" broke my heart (and I mean that in the best way possible). Please have a segment on your blog called "Hayi Updates" (lol) where you update us on news about her. I am going to miss coming to this blog on a daily basis to check for updated comments and news about her. It's unbelievable how emotional I'm getting over a 15 year old Korean singer. ahh lol

  3. Thanks so much for this..Honestly I was sad but I was even more sad of the thought of not hearing Hayi sing for a while. Honestly, JYP would never appreciate Hayi enough till the end unless if he's the one coaching. I don't know, honestly I don't even want her to go into the big three and just go with like other entertainment like Leon Ent. that manages IU, well I guess anything but JYP, or else i will be really mad. If anything YG he makes her sound like herself, not the best technically but I like the way he gives her that much freedom and encouragement, so she won't feel as burdened. I love her, I wanna hear from her again soon, I cried becuz of her too.. for me she is the Best!!!! LEE HAYI...the BEST!!! Korean people just don't know it yet:) Thanks for the translation again.

  4. @Onsemiro: I loved both of her rendition tonight. Like you, I wasn't a fan of that Killing me softly song but I think she did really well. Also eventhough I wasn't used to Rolling in the deep so slow, after I heard it the second time it suits her well and it had the emotion elements that JYP always wanted.

JYP always has to find fault, somehow. If not the climax thing, it's the emotion. She did change the rythm at the end of Rolling in the Deep for this purpose.

I heard that in total they both got the same total score? And Ha Yi lead the online score but lost just because of the text message. It is really a shame. :(

Now I wish her the best and I hope she chooses YG, because he has his faith on her, and I agree with his comments. After all the hype JYP gives on being in 'love' with Ha Yi's voice, he gave Ji Min a better score. Obviously technically Ji Min was great, but Mercy is a seductive and sexy song. And Ji Min's was not. Even Boa gave higher scores to Ha Yi.

She should stick with the one who really believes she's a star. Not just a trainee with potential

I hope they make albums soon.. I will miss her.

  5. Ah, I forgot to say that I really admire her composure at the end. She is mature and so sweet.

  6. Feelings....**sniff,sniff**...lol. Im not sure if there is enough space on this page to express how hurt i really feel about Hayi's loss. I feel like someone took something from my daughter, and i have to tell her i can't get it back, with tears in my eyes.

Park Ji Min, for the entire competition, used a vocal technique, that was popular, 20-30 years ago, that uses high-pitched, acrobatic vocals to overpower, and overwhelm the listeners.

That's where W.Houston, M.Carey, & Beyonce have made a killing(financially). Problem is, it's been done before, the time has come, and people are looking for something different. If Ji Min doesn't get the proper marketing & production, she will fade faster than you can blink. Her winning kpop star only puts gasoline on the already burning flame of expectation.

Hayi had one microphone, and charisma, and won the 1st battle.

Lee Hayi,...i've said before, was the front runner for being the most versatile, when singing songs out of her comfort zone. Last night, was just not fair. It was 10 against 1. Lee Hayi vs Ji Min & 10 dancers...who can win against that?....im sorry it was just so ridiculous, from where i sat...

I have so much more to say, but ill press the hold button, until later..

Onsemiro,...ill do my best for the remainder of the year, even until the next kpop star season 2, to keep up with your blogs, and translations. You have been awesome for the work you've done on this page, and i sincerely thank you for your dedication....

  7. andy, no worries. Who wouldn't want such a talent? I'll blog right away when I get any info about where she ends up.

  8. I think the same as Anonymous...Please open your blog " Hayi Updates" I really miss her. After the show end I do not know how to follow her update, which company she will be cast. I hope YG will cast her. I am one of her fan, so I like to know more, see how she continue her music career. I wish her luck

  9. Anonym at 8:24PM, thank you so much for sharing. How lovely! And I'll keep you updated on her every (I'll try) move.

  10. darlightangel16, I prefer LOEN Entertainment too. But we'll have to wait until one of the three agencies have a pick. (sigh)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wahyimo, I just read Hayi broke down the moment she saw her parents who came backstage to comfort her. Which broke my heart and at the same time made me more proud of her. As you just pointed out, she's really mature for her age.

    ReplyDelete
  12. kpopantz, very well put! Ironically, even when you're venting your frustrations, you sound full of energy, and I really like it. Especially I couldn't agree more with you: such vocal techniques are so yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Onsemiro, where did you read that about Hayi broke down?

    ReplyDelete
  14. TA TA, I think Hayi will take two steps forward next time as she just took one step back tonight. There will always be growing pains and she will be a really great singer someday. And no worries. I'll keep you updated on her.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Can you tell us where you read about Hayi's apparent "breakdown"? if it's in Korean, can you please translate?

    ReplyDelete
  16. @onsemio, yeah I feel like she needs a break from the big three, but then again if its part of the condition that the second place be taken by one of the three, then YG i beg of you, save this girl's ass from the "something is always wrong" monster JYP. Though, it was JYP who hugged her first during the credits at the end, although that still doesn't cut for me. And Lee Hayi cried even more?? I feel bad.
And your are definitely right bout the high notes stuff, cuz comments for Jimin are always like "how can she sing like that at young age", and then lee hayi is also only a year older and she already sings like an old black woman. I feel like i'm just releasing the sadness now. I just really wish that Hayi's talent won't be wasted and forever underappreciated, just like most unique solo singers in Korea :(

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think there's a small chance she goes to Loen. Although I won't mind if she does. The contestants have been courted for too long by the big three, and I'm sure they will offer bigger contract terms. The show was premised as an audition for the big three after all.

"Hayi has never shed tears, not even once, but after all the cameras went off and the moment she saw her parents, she gave way to a flood of tears. I don't think it's only because she felt sorry that she hadn't been able to pull out a win." http://media.daum.net/entertain/enews/view?cateid=1032&newsid=20120430100129830&p=tvreport

  20. @Onsemiro I don't know how big of a fan you are of the show "American Idol." But Hayi's journey on Kpopstar reminded a lot of the American Idol contestant Katherine Mcphee.

    ReplyDelete
  21. darlightangel16 and Wahyimo, yeah I know, I know. Maybe I'm just babbling 'cause I'm kinda mad at JYP?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonym 9:24PM, it'll be awesome if Hayi becomes a runner-up-turned-out-to-be-bigger-than-the-winner, just like Katharine McPhee. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Onsemiro Katherine Mcphee was on another league since the beginning and the Judges broke her down slowly and slowly (just because, in my opinion, she was too damn good)...and she seemed mentally and emotionally exhausted by the end. I think it's so cool how you're so in tuned with American shows AND Korean shows. I need a friend like you in my life!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anonym at 9:58PM, hey, I'm just one click away! ;) Btw, I didn't watch the season Katharine competed so had no idea what had happened. Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  25. She can be more famous than the winner surely, American Idol rarely gives the winner any boost after winning.

But while Katherine is very pop to my ears, it is much harder for Soul singers to be as famous, because of the market (providing Ha Yi doesn't venture to other genres)

To my eyes JYP screwed up his chance to get Hayi, and that is very silly. It's like him losing IU allover again. (Although it's still a bigger possibility than her going to SM).

If he had given a larger score for Ha Yi, and she won, and she chooses JYPE, it would have been great for the company because it'll give the illusion that JYPE is no.1 too.

Based on his scores for them both, Ji Min is his first choice. But Ji Min might very well go to SM.

I totally long for JYP to get unchosen and whine about his mistake. Haha.. but of course that's just me being spiteful.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow, I turn my back for a minute and there are 22 comments! Like each week over the last month or so, I look forward to your post and all the comments from the Hayi fan-club. I'm not sure which I'm going to miss more. Like @anonymous #1, I don't want to stop adding Hayi songs to my iPod and I hope I will not have to wait long to add more. One thing I want to point out, that I think you all are thinking for sure. Like John Park, Bobby Kim (who I just saw at KMF 2012 last night), and Busker Busker, they may not have done well in competition but their star power was undeniable and it was just a matter of time for them to make it big. I can't turn around and not hear or read about Busker Busker and John Park's got a hit record now too. And while, not a McPhee fan, myself, I think she's done a bit better than Taylor Hicks, so I completely agree that this might be the better road for her to follow. As for the finale itself, I was really hoping for a different song from Hayi this week and I was not looking forward to her singing Adele. I was also hoping for, I don't know, something gripping, something sad, maybe...like "Sad Love Song" from Cho Eun or another ballad like something by FTTS.

Overall, I think a little more training, a little more time and a little more experience and she's going to do some neat things.

Thanks for the translations and giving all of us a place to follow the show, understand the happenings and share our thoughts!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi Onsemiro, thanks a zillion for all the translation and updates. I am still kinda moody since last evening after Hayi's lost. She sang obviously better than PJM. Anyway, I am sure she will do much much better than PJM 'cos Hayi just had more attributes and I just love her voice and smile. I had never gone so crazy about Kpopstar till I saw her singing. Now I understand why my daughter can get so crazy with a few Kpop boys as well.
Hope to see your updates about Hayi and we wish her all the best and I know she will make it someday.
Till then.. warmest regards. mom & two daughters.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wahyimo, I think we may see things from a different perspective. The winner is holding all the cards in this casting game while the runner-up is to be chosen by one of the three agencies. JYP might have been afraid that Hayi would choose YG instead of JYP if she had won. So he might have wanted to be the offeror, not the offeree, in this casting game, so that he can eventually pick Hayi. I know I have gone too far. haha.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Allan, absolutely! There's still much room for both the girls to improve and I want Hayi to be well prepared for her future career as a professional singer.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Dear anonymous mom and her two daughters from Singapore, I've enjoyed your company too. :) Thank you. And I'll keep you updated.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Onsemiro: Ah I wasn't clear that that was going to happen to the Runner Up. But that sounds really weird. I can understand if it was a promise for a runner up prize meaning 'at least one of the companies will offer' makes more sense. But how can they prevent more than one agency to offer for her.
And so she has to take that offer? Can she decline?

  32. Excerpt from YG interview: 양현석은 "1위를 차지한 박지민 양은 본인의 선택에 따라 소속사를 정할 것"이라며 "아직까지 정해진 것은 없지만 3사 모두 박지민 양의 선택을 존중할 것"이라고 말했다. YG said, "Jimin, the winner, will choose her agency and all three agencies will respect her decision."

He added, "I know everyone's eyeing on where the winner will end up but it's also very important which agency the rest of the contestants (which implies all of them, not only the top ten) will be affiliated with. These decisions will determine the way how they will make their professional debut(i.e., what kind of singers they will be morphed into through what kind of training in what kind of system). So I want your attention to them too."

양현석에 따르면 1위를 제외한 나머지 출연자들에 대한 접촉은 3사 모두 가능하다. 접촉이 중복될 경우, 최종 선택은 출연자의 결정에 따른다. According to YG, all three agencies have the option to contact all of the rest of the contestants except the winner. If a contestant is cast by more than two agencies, then it's the contestant's decision to make.

  33. As you explained. Hayi will be chosen by one of them (YG,JYP,SM). What about if 2 agencies choose Hayi ? Is it up to Hayi to make decision ?

    ReplyDelete
  34. TA TA, I made a mistake in my translation. It should be "more than one agency." Accordingly, it'll be up to the contestant in that case. So if Hayi is chosen by more than one agency, then she'll decide where to go.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Understand now. Thank you very much.

    ReplyDelete
  36. thank u so much for all your updates about HaYi. Im not too worried about her future because I have a feeling that she has more star quality than any of the contestants on the show including Jimin. Thus, i have no doubt in my mind that she will be successful.

in a way she reminds me of xfactor UK 2010 when a gorgeous female singer called Rebecca Ferguson became the runnerup of the show. her voice is very unique and has a very strong jazzy/soulful colour to it. a year later her album sold double the number of copies of the album the actual winner of that series released despite having a weaker promotional campagin for the album.

PJM has a great voice but its a voice we have heard many times before and does nothing to set her apart from anyone else. Also, i feel that reason behind PJM's sudden support is that alot of the fans who used to support other contestants on the show like Ayoun and Michelle moved to support PJM after seeing their fav contestant getting eliminated. this is not necessarily a good thing since it means that those fans are not actually there for PJM alone. this is particularily noticeable when u compare it with HaYi's fanbase who has suppored her from day 1 and ensured that she remained ahead of the pack at all times.

in either case good luck to both. they both did well and i hope that their friendship remains unchanged following the end of this show

    ReplyDelete
  37. @onsemiro, hehe yeah i am mad at JYP not becuz of the low scores, just that I feel like throughout the live show, all he did was bring Hayi down, never complemented her well enough unless if he was the one directing her, which probably affected her confidence a lot. I understand constructive criticism but his goes over the top. I actually thought Hayi liked JYP too at first during the recorded show. and I think the live show gave Hayi so much pressure and emotional pain that she needs a bit of a rest or at least time to heal.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anonym at 9:43AM, very well said. When one gets a perfect score on his/her SAT test, it doesn't necessarily mean he/she is the smartest. Jimin performed her job faithfully following the "manual" for the singing competitions.

    ReplyDelete
  39. darlightangel16, JYP is often criticized as being way too full of himself.

    ReplyDelete
  40. As much as we would like to bash any of the judges (JYP especially lol), we have to keep in mind that they have more experience in that entertainment business than any of us. They are judges for Kpopstar, yes, but they are business people first. Every comment they make or every action they take, I feel, is strategic especially when cameras are around. They are like one of them masterminds on those survival reality shows that everyone wants to vote out but can't. I don't think it was a coincidence that BoA and JYP seemed to have switched attitudes towards Hayi near the end of the competition. It was almost as if Boa was told by someone of higher authority in SM that she should be nicer to Hayi in case she wins so she can choose SM (that's just the conspiracy theorist in me talking). While here we are talking and ranting about JYP's actions and words on the show, he was probably thinking about what's going to benefit him AFTER the show. Thus, I think @Onsemiro's theory that perhaps JYP wanted leeway in getting Hayi to his company could very well be a possibility. If she was the winner, he would have to respect her choice...that means that if Hayi chose YG, JYP would not even get the chance to contact Hayi to persuade her or YG to beg him. I don't think JYP's love for Hayi has changed at all. He's been eyeing her throughout the entire competition. She embodies his ideal type of singer. He knows that YG feels the same.

...and I've gone too far. lol

    ReplyDelete
  41. Haha, as you may know, no one actually meant to bash or flame JYP here. But everyone needs a place to vent. hehe :)

  42. YAY u guys i just saw on Youtube a comment saying that HaYi has hit the #1 spot on the DAUM Real Time Music chart with Killing me softly. JiMin is at #9 with music is my life. HaYi was able to overthrow SNSD's new subunit from the top spot too

    well done HaYi :D

  44. Anonymous & Onsemiro. I just thought Onsemiro had ever suggested the song " Feeling Goog" for Hayi ( Nina Simone version). Then I found Rebecca Furguson sang this song so well too. I hope to hear Hayi sing this song too in future

    ReplyDelete
  45. Reality check: now we know who has more selling power. PJM is the winner by definition, but otherwise and in any other case, Hayi is the actual winner.

    ReplyDelete
  46. thats great news..btw this is not the first time HaYi has topped the daum chart. majority of the songs she sang on the live shows have topped that chart including Rihanna's cover and Regrets. interestingly, JiMin only topped that chart with Over the Rainbow and her group song Fame. In most cases, HaYi has charted higher than JiMin.

HaYi's U Go Girl is also positioned above Jimin's You raise me up on the Melon chart.

also, her cover of as Time goes by was #16 on the Gaon top 30. she was the only contestant in the top 20 of the Gaon. Ayoun's cover from that same week was at 22.

the only time Jimin was ahead of Hayi in the charts was when she sang Over the Rainbow

    ReplyDelete
  47. TA TA, thank you so much for saying that. As a long-time fan of the late Nina Simone, I really hope Hayi sings one of her songs, especially, "Feeling Good" or "Everything Must Change."

    ReplyDelete
  48. Anonym 11:18AM, I still think Jimin has the advantage as the K-pop Star winner and also the market power among those who favor her powerful voice over Hayi's vocal technique and unique vocal style. But I also think Hayi's won mass appeal - and most importantly "worldwide" mass appeal - to a wide range of age groups.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Anonym at 11:35AM, I think it means a lot more this time because Hayi is topping download chart over Jimin after she lost her "one-on-one" contest with Jimin for the first time (even though we Hayi fans think it's a loss in name only).

  50. @TA TA

Yea Rebecca Ferguson is amazing. i cant stop listening to her album. shes like a more jazzy version of adele.

her songs "Teach me how to be loved" and "Shoulder to shoulder" just kill me, and to think that she co-wrote all the tracks. I cant wait for her to debut in the US.

in a way she reminds me of HaYi. both have distinctive recording voices with so much soul.

  51. Omg I just discovered Rebecca Ferguson. She is so far the closest thing I can find to Hayi. Thank you so much to the person who talked about her!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ahh, too bad, the song has gone down to number 8 in the charts, but not very disappointing. Obviously the others have had more fanbase all this time.

Thanks for the translation Onsemiro. :) much clearer now. I'm sure the agency will pitch something to the winner, because she will need an informed decision.

I hope we'll hear news of Ha Yi's future soon. Miss her already.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Your translation is my favorite cake while the comments are the sweet cherries on top. I love everything on this page. :)

I'll accept for now that Jimin claimed the title but I will definitely be mad if I won't hear anything from Hayi after the contest. It would be a waste for the Korean Music Industry to let pass this kind of voice. Gone are the days when all of the people would only want to hear voices belting out high notes. I know I'm biased to Hayi but I sincerely want that girl to take over the music industry with her voice... just because I know she can.

Again thank you for all the translations of Hayi's performances from Day 1 to last. I will surely miss your updates of her much as I will miss her performances. Thank you. ^^

    ReplyDelete
  54. Wahyimo, I think Hayi's doing great against TaeTiSeo (Taeyeon, Tiffany & Seohyun), JYP, Sistar, and 4 Minutes as her song's currently in the 7th place following all these big names. :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. wolfpeach, thanks a lot for the compliment. Hayi has a one of a kind talent, so I'm sure she will be a one of a kind singer.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I read the comments about Rebecca Ferguson, so i listened to some of her music. I like her style, but she didn't remind me of Hayi. While both are soulful, i immediately thought that she's good, but can't go any higher or expand, beyond soul music. Hayi's ceiling is alot higher, and she'll be able to crossover to different platforms, easier than her competitors, especially the girl that won...LOL....anyway, it's Monday, and like Wahyimo, im already missing her singing.....Onesemiro, i saw you post that you'll keep updating the info on her, so that's comforting, and appreciated. What im hoping is that someone will help her create a website for her, so her fanclub can stay connected. Sunday is coming, and there's nothing to look forward to...MAN! that's torment...LOL

    ReplyDelete
  57. kpopantz, your post made me want to check out Rebecca Ferguson.... BTW, I just finished watching SBS's exclusive talk show with JYP, and something told me he might be wanting to cast Hayi too.

    ReplyDelete
  58. @Onsemiro, can you please tell us -from what you can remember- what JYP said on that show? What gave you the feeling that he wants to cast Hayi?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I hope they posted the interview on youtube or dailymotion somewhere. While im looking for it, here's some more info one the soompi.com website, about what actually happened during the show, as to why the winner wasn't allowed to choose the company she wanted to sign with....which i suspect will be SM, with her big sister, BOA....here's the link.....http://www.soompi.com/news/park-jimin-wins-sbs-kpop-star-but-we-still-dont-know-which-agency-she-will-choose

  60. i'm am so sad when the show is over. No more feeling excite of waiting for hayi performance. In other i feel good that i would sleep more sunday. i literally sleep about 2 or 3 hours since the the show air live, i stay up all night waiting for hayi performance to be post on youtube. what a crazy sunday. i miss u so much lee hayiiiii. ANY kpop star now is over, my tension now will shift to the voice, son seung yeon fighting. Hope she will win and doesn't get second as lee hayi. Please keep up dae infor about seungyeon too. thank so much for ur translate

    ReplyDelete
  61. kpopantz, I already read the article this morning. But the tone of the original Korean article was quite different. It's not Jimin was not allowed to choose where to go right on the show, but SBS, YG, JYP, and BoA gave Jimin a special favor. They simply didn't want to rush her into making too hasty a decision with little information about each agency. For her own decision will determine the rest of her career. So they agreed to have a couple individual meetings with her and her parents, just like job fairs, if you will.

    ReplyDelete
  62. andy, why not? Let's root for Seungyeon while waiting for the news on Hayi. :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anonym at 10:22PM, JYP said something like, as a judge, he gave the points based on the contestant's performance, but he will definitely cast the one he likes "as a person." Since this is his only criteria in casting, he said, the JYPE singers might not be the best among all the Korean idol singers/groups but that's why he and the JPYE singers are on good terms, just like friends. I think you gotta watch the show to get the "feel".

    ReplyDelete
  64. Onesemiro - I believe you're right. While in the process of preparing for my korean language lessons, it's not easy trying to get info on what i want, because of the all the in-complete info given, by these other blog sites. Thank you for giving us the actually, original translation, and not just your feelings, of what was said/done. What i see happening now, if you post something, you're gonna immediately be ask for the translation. I hope everyone will be patient, and allow you to post the info when you get time...thanks for correcting my information...

  66. kpopantz, if you are seriously thinking about learning Korean, why don't you give it a try on line first? Here's the link I recommend: http://korean.sogang.ac.kr/ This is a site provided by Sogang University located in Seoul, Korea.

And about SBS's "Iron Heart" that will feature Hayi and Jimin (and/or some of the other contestants) - the show will be taped on May 3 and is scheduled to air on May 8.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I have http://korean.sogang.ac.kr/, bookmarked, and started the lessons just know. This will do, for now, until i can get my audible lessons going...thank you...So it's Iron Heart, not Strong Heart?...i stand corrected. Im excited! Can wait for this episode to post...they may allow them to sing! Let's hope so...

    ReplyDelete
  68. The title can be interpreted in both ways - Strong or Iron Heart. Strong Heart is the literal, narrow, translation, and Iron Heart is more figurative.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Onsemiro. I really hope you can post some part of Strong Heart especially of both girls. Thank you so much in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I wonder if I will get this attached to a young contestant in Kpopstar season 2. haha

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah, Hayi is a one of a kind.

    ReplyDelete
  72. dear Onsemiro and the rest, thank you for all the updates about Hayi. Can't wait to see her on stage again! Come to think about it, could feel that Hayi was relaxed and enjoying her song during the finals likewise JYP and this gives me the thought that JYP has his own personal agenda towards Hayi (that's why the low marks). I think YG is the most sincere guy towards every contestants. Anyway, time will tell.. mom and girls.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Dear Onsemiro, i feel like you have very good taste in music (and by "good" I mean very similar taste to mine x]). Can you please make a post about some of your favourite songs and or singers of all time?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Anonym at 8:16PM, even though I love all kinds of music, from classical to rock, jazz, pop, Latin and broadway musicals, my personal favorites lean more towards the rock tracks. And one of my original motivations to blog was to share my favorite Korean pop/rock bands/singers past and present. So basically, all the singers/bands and music I blog here are my favorites. :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Mom and girls from Singapore, now they are polling on "Which agency would you recommend Jimin to pick?" (on the Daum site) and SM is getting the most votes and JYP the least. BTW, I'm currently working on subtitling the show, "The Healing Camp," featuring JYP for I thought it's worth watching.

  76. Excerpts from the interview with Park Seonghoon, the producer of K-pop Star:

Q: '폭풍 고음' 박지민과 '소울 중저음' 이하이의 장점은. Tell me the strengths of the high-pitched power voice Park Jimin and the low/mid-pitched soul Lee Hayi.
Jimin's got the music in her. She gave a totally different rendition of "Mercy" on live stage from the rehearsal. I think she has the outstanding "feel" for the stage 'cause (in the final) she ad-libbed in spite of herself. I think ad-libbing itself came out (of nowhere) just like an energy. (This sentence is quite unclear even in Korean.)
Hayi's got the charismatic presence on stage - and even off stage. Sometimes she's aloof, sometimes she's like a kid, and sometimes she's very focused. Hayi has the "it" factor as a "star" while Jimin as a singer. Even Hayi's voice is really unique in Korea. Even though Jimin won the final, we don't know what will happen (i.e., who will win) in the professional scene.

Q: 수준급 실력을 보인 참가자들에게 러브콜이 많이 올텐데. I guess those contestants with outstanding singing ability are currently receiving management offers from various agencies, right?
다들 좋은 소식을 들려줬으면 좋겠다.(웃음) There have been continuous offers coming in. Lots of producers keep coming to check (the contestants). I told the producers I would talk with them after the final. Of course, all our contestants are surely free to (make a contract and) debut with "any" agencies. I hope I can hear good news from all of them.

  79. @kpopantz, in youtube and in other video sites the show is usually translated as "Strong heart". i'm not sure if you know this already but there's a site that posts the english subbed of it, usually late by a few weeks.

Keep the news coming guys! :P

    ReplyDelete
  80. Wahyimo, what's the name of the site with english subs for Strong Heart?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Anonym at 10:56PM, thanks! Frankly, while working on subtitling, I'm beginning to really appreciate people (on Youtube for example) who provide subtitles for others. It's much more time-consuming than just translating.

    ReplyDelete
  82. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbS6nk0QhW0&feature=relmfu....please share your thoughts on what the judges responses are to PJM being announced the winner...Is it - WHAT!, OMG, or What just happened? Especially when YG spins around in his chair, almost ramming JYP in the leg...it's over, but SBS just posted this video on their channel. I just wanted to get some feedback.

    ReplyDelete
  83. @kpopantz, YG looked like he was watching the fifa world cup and South Korea just missed a goal by an inch. He has made it very obvious (and I don't think he has any intention of hiding it) that he believed Hayi is the real winner.

    ReplyDelete
  84. @kpopantz :
    kshownow.net

I used to wait till Kpop Star was subbed before I watched. The subber for kpop star is boanoss, but then they sort of got stuck from ep 9. Lucky for me I found this blog that I can get translation for Lee Hayi!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Somehow I keep coming back to her earlier performances. I think piano accompaniments are much better for her, it really brings out the soul feel and whatever emotion she brings to the performance.

In live performances, she does her intros best, like in don't stop the music, killing me softly, when there is very minimal or no accompaniment. Her voice totally takes control.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I still can't help but think that it was that 1 pt difference JYP made in scoring that decided the result of the contest. Hayi got the online vote, Jimin for sms voting. That's 10% for Hayi and 30% for Jimin. Whoever gets the 60% from the judges will obviously be the winner.

    first set:
    hayi - 291/300 ; jimin - 292/300
    second set:
    hayi - 295/300 ; jimin - 295/300

To actually think that a battle was won by merely a point is really frustrating. I'm sincerely not hating on Jimin's winning but...it's really just frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  87. @wolfpeach it's really hard to say that Hayi lost because really..she didn't. She's only 16 and her name has already appeared at the top of the charts so many times. She popped out of no where and gave Park Jimin a good run for her money. Without Hayi, the show would've been ridiculously predictable. She got to meet her ideal man. She has won the hearts of so many people. That cute Korean girl in the school uniform that we saw in the first few episode has grown up so much. She has won in so many ways.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Dear Wolfpeach, I join your frustration and agree with u that if JYP were to give fair marks like YG and BoA, I belive Hayi could be the winner. But it may be a blessing in disguise as Hayi had been leading in online votes. She lost the car & $$ but like some of you had said, she may do much better than the winner PJM. Let's hope Onsemiro can update us good news on Hayi. Keep cool k:0) m&g (mom & girls from SIN)

    ReplyDelete
  89. wolfpeach, Anonym at 12:52AM, and Anonym. Mom and Girls from Singapore, I hear you all! I also feel still bitter that Hayi didn't win the K-pop Star title, the super car, and the prize money of 300 million won (approx. 270K US dollars). But on second thought, it's time for me to move on; and just wait and see what wonderful things she will bring to us. :)

Anywho...Im trying to find the full YG training video of hayi singing Adele's "Someone Like You". There's snippet on youtube titled: Lee Hayi - Someone Like You Snippet... for your listening pleasure..

    ReplyDelete
  91. dear all, perhaps let me share with you my real life experience. One of my largest contract about USD$88million and worth about half a million commission was high jet by my two colleagues when I was working as a salesperson in a MNC 11 years ago. Is a long, long story. However, it all turns out to a blessing. SO, don't worry a thing about Hayi. I am sure she will do just fine. At least, she is number one in YG's heart and I could feel YG is sincere about making his comment. SO, let's all cheer up...m&g

    ReplyDelete
  92. I've probably said too much already here. :P But I was listening again to HaYi's studio songs / version. And it still bugs me how her voice is different live from studio. I don't know if you guys have noticed this?

In the studio versions, the voice depth seemed to disappear, and I can recognize that the song is being sung by a very young person. I don't really notice this in her live performance.

I know some of the studios are better because she controlled her voice much better and her high notes came out softer.

But, I'm beginning to wonder if this is going to be a problem. If i have never seen her live performances, I probably would just pass her off as a good singer.

(Please don't kill me for that last sentence)

    ReplyDelete
  93. No, Wahyimo, I love it when you share your thoughts here, so please write more! Actually, I've secretly loved Hayi's live rendition of "Mercy" 100 times more than its studio recording where she sang just f-o-r-t-e from the beginning till the end. I wonder if JYP got upset about it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  94. Going to the studio, is the same as going to the doctor. They do surgery on artists' voice recordings, then wonder why the album goes flat. Her future sound engineer should(better) be able to balance that out. (Stating the obvious,here)...The objective should be to make her cd/downloads, as organic and her live performances. While i do believe that "machines" create the impossible, they will be of little use during her concerts, like when her dvds' & live videos come out. The rawness of the voice, especially live, is the reason why we still go to concerts. It let's us put a face with song, that transfers the emotions to our hearts.

    ReplyDelete
  95. i wonder sometime in this week. what if hayi sing killing me softly in the semi-final , and U go-girl in the final. the result would have change. hjhjhjhj

  96. I just saw that CL of 2NE1 tweeted something about hayi few hours ago..does any1 know what she said??

    ReplyDelete
  97. Anonym, it's not CL but a CL enthusiast who tweeted - CL does not tweet. She (or he?) tweeted something like "Hayi goes to YG? Hmmmmm then I gotta change my boat," which translates "I gotta stop being a fan of a certain K-pop Star contestant but start to like her." Hope it helps.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Ahh ok thanx a lot.. Was surprised there for a min since I dont think that 2ne1 members were interested in her that much

    ReplyDelete
  99. When I first read a post mentioning CL's tweet, I was also surprised. She/He is even using CL's picture for her/his tweeter profile.

    ReplyDelete
  100. @onsemiro , which artist would you want Hayi to do a duet with? I want Hayi to make a song with Lessang's Gary so badly.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Anonym.@ 11:12PM

I love LeeSsang. I love Gil and Gary. I think Gary's slow-paced, chopped and screwed, rapping is just divine. But many times, their lyrics are too adult, as in their smash hit, "I Turn Off the TV." I think Hayi will be so excited to duet with her ideal man, TOP. As for singers, I'm thinking Bobby Kim or Yoon Mirae (T).

    ReplyDelete
  102. Thank for your translation, that's exactly what i am looking for ^^
Ha Yi has a pure talent that no one will know for sure that what exactly she can not do. I believe in her future.
However, the result make me mad. Both JM and HaYi when came to this round, they are all talent but Ha yi deserve the title for what she did. I'm not say it because I'm Hayi fan or supposed that I say it because I'm her fan, Her final performance was way better than JM.
While Hayi always bring us different version of any song she sang, JM just do it like the original. In the final round, Music is my life was so annoying with many high note. After she got sick, her throat is not good and I'm feel so poor for this girl because high note is all she can do the best to impress audience.Even Charice Pempengco who can reach a very beautiful high note can hurt her throat if she take to much advantage on it ( no offence, I'm Charice fan ^^).
Come to Mercy, The technique is the same as Hayi, the different is JM version adding noisy music. She do exactly what she was teach and I have the feeling that her coach this round is JYP cause the technique is so similar. She sing Mercy sounded like commercial not a bout art. She sang well but I feel no personality in performance.
About Hayi performance, Killing me softly with his song was great and so is Rolling in the deep although some how her pronunciation was not as good as JM, but what I love is that she brought different feeling when hearing this song, that was strange and fresh. And the last sentence she sang, her low note was perfectly beautiful and just like Adele.
I can not stop care about The winner although it does not mean any thing. I have watched the reaction of the judges after hearing the winner announcement, YG was completely regret and from What he has said at the end, Ha Yi must have been the winner.
Although JYP did good with HaYi, I hope she can go to YG. JYp was good but he always forced her to do what he thought it is best. That's the best but for a long time, she will lose her creation. Meanwhile YG always want her to explore, to break out, exploit her potential, to be what she really are.
That what I thought and I did not mean anything bad to any one I mentioned in my comment. Once again, thank you for translation ^^

  116. This is good, i expand my knowledge with every post.(LOL) Park Ji Min & Kim Janghoon must be holding, what i thought was milk, is actually a yogurt-based vitamin drink. Is Purmil the leading dairy producer in Korea? I see that they have some affiliates here in the states. (...You had to remind me. Why are you force-feeding me that unacceptable reality?....;) Don't respond to that, just let me flush it, when im ready.;)

    ReplyDelete
  117. No, it's not. The top three dairy companies are Maeil, Namyang, and Seoul. When I lived in Seoul, though, I loved Yonsei and Samyook dairy products, which are respectively affiliated with Yonsei University and Samyook University.

  118. aww no need to feel bitter for Hayi guys :)

PJM is will be doing lots of commercials in the future as part of her prize as the winner of Kpop Star.

i actually recall also reading that in addition to the contract, money, car, and CF deals, she will also be getting drama roles.

few pple were actually complaining on ALKP that Hayi is getting just as much publicity as PJM with her YG articles and scheduled appearances on the Kim Yuna show.

  119. I've got a Q, Onsemiro. I'm wondering why there isn't a lot of Superstar K videos.. It has been going on for much longer. I kinda like that from what few vidoes I see , the groups in it doesn't seem to be in a sing-shouting competition.

I've watched some of the military audition for the newest season because of news here and there, but don't know much else about it. Btw, out of curiousity, how is it possible for people in enlistment to audition for this kind of thing? How would that work..

    ReplyDelete
  120. Wahyimo, Superstar K has been the most watched audition show in Korea but we don't see many SSK vids "yet" probably because it's still preliminaries? Or it's produced by a cable network? Anyways, I'll give you some links to the SSK performances people are buzzing about.
