KOREAN MUSIC: Lee Hayi of SBS’s “K-Pop Star” (11)

케이팝 스타: 이하이 (Lee Hayi, or Lee Ha Yi)

Hayi is back.  Back to her own self again.  The Hayi I first saw singing Jazmine Sullivan: her stare and dare.  I think the rearrangement of Lee Hyori’s “U-Go-Girl” brilliantly fit Hayi’s magnetic, soulful voice and her level of performance was just superb.  Although her singing was somewhat anticlimactic, who cares?  She’s only fifteen and just a contestant of a singing competition.  No amateur (even professional) singer can easily pull off a flawless four-minute performance.

And yes, I kind of agree with JYP that Hayi’s performance appeared a little too much calculated not to make any mistakes but I wonder what he would’ve told her if her singing had faltered a little while delivering an emotional performance full of blood and thunder.  Plus, it was Lee Hyori not BMK that Hayi sang tonight; in other words, no one would expect Britney Spears to sing like Whitney Houston. Would you? For that reason, I am in complete disagreement with her score given by JYP.

Lee Hayi:  "K-Pop Star" Semifinal
Lee Hyori: "U-Go-Girl" (aired on 04/22/2012)

Here’s what the judges said:

Yang Hyun Suk (or Yang Hyeonseok): (Hayi was) just amazing tonight.  Truly.  I, as one of those who have longed to see that mysterious stare of hers again, felt like this immense weight had been lifted off my chest as I was watching her performance.  First of all, she was totally different (from the other previous nights) as she was wearing the look of confidence on her face and carrying herself very confidently.  Tonight she gave a solid performance filled with confidence in every way.  Personally, I’m so happy (for her). (99 out of 100)

BoA:  (To Hayi) Hayi, Congratulations!  At last you’re back.  Such a confident look of hers…. I mean, she had no problem singing as she was sure of herself.  She was doing exactly what she wanted to be doing on stage and she enjoyed her own performance tonight.  There had been always something missing with her performances, but tonight, I feel like she has overcome everything and taken a great leap forward.  That was just great to watch.  She did really great.  (99 out of 100)

Park Jin Young (or Park Jinyeong):  I agree with these two judges.  I really liked the beginning of Hayi’s performance as it looked really solid and comfortable for the first time (since the live competition started), but I think I want to see her carried away by emotion while singing.  She seemed to have stayed in the safety zone from the beginning till the end; she seemed to have planned to sing comfortably within the safety zone.  If she makes it to the final round, I want her to break free from the box of her thoughts – I gotta do what I do best. Instead, I want to see her truly carried away by emotion, so carried away that her singing will probably be even off key and off beat. (Which I wouldn’t care.)  (92 out of 100)

Hayi’s overall score was 290 points out of 300, and I think, she won the semifinal round.

Now here’s my one-line review of the night’s special performances: “Much cry and little wool.”  They were not true collaborations as I didn’t see a natural flow of synergetic energy between a contestant and a professional group from each agency.  Hayi’s performance with Miss A was my least favorite ‘cause it was all about Miss A not Hayi.  No doubt they were a real feast for the eyes though.

Special Performance by Lee Hayi with Miss A

  3. Hi again! and thanks again for the translation.
While i understand what the three judges are raving about Hayi's performance, I really dislike the song. It was the most boring song she's ever performed in my ears. I've never heard it before and I looked up Lee Hyori's original version and couldn't even listen to it in full. But I'm happy for her anyway. One thing about her stage act is that she gives too many winks! She seems to try to cover up 'not knowing what to do' with winks. Not a fan of that

The scores were ridiculous now more than ever perhaps. I suspect at the finals the three judges will give the same exact scores for both of them and will leave the decision to the viewers. Yesterday I assume Ji Min got highest viewers vote.

As much as I like Ji Min and symphatise with her, when she's done that many off keys (regardless of the reason), I don't see how she deserve that score. Or am I just mean.

I thought Lady Marmalade was even less about Ah Yeon, all the big notes were done by the two SNSD who seem to take this opportunity to prove that they are not less singers than the contestants.

I suspect the problem with Hayi's collab was because there were too many people.

  4. No, you're not being mean and you're not all alone. Jimin has had a tendency to go off key all along and this is what has been bothering me most with her singing.

  5. thank u so much for translating Hayi's part.

I completely disagree with JYP. that was hands down my fav performance of HaYi since the live shows began. i felt like i was watching a professional superstar singing rather than just another contestant on the show.

i actually thought the song had a very steady built to it and climaxed wonderfully when she started the dance routine and sang with such a ferocity i was actually blown away by the whole thing.

she looked happy and it felt like she was having fun. she was very very entertaining. i think i repeated that performance like 10 times already

i really dont get what JYP wants from her. shes 15 years old and he wants her to sing about blood and gore. i bet u if she had done that he would have taken points off of her score for messing up the notes. people here might disagree with me but i really don't want her to sing more ballads next episode. she has sung so many ballads already throughout the live shows that I just wish she would continue doing what she did today. shes still too young to express the dark and mature feelings of most korean ballads. something young, retro, and easy going would work well with her age and unique voice

did u guys actually know that she trended world wide on twitter? a lot of pple were live streaming this episode because off the collaboration with BB and SNSD and so ended up watching HaYi.

to the poster talking about the winking, i think Hayi squints her eyes because of the bright lights faced at her. i have noticed for a while that she always appears to squeez her eyes especially her right one when shes on stage even during the time when the result is called out.

also Hayi was #1 this week. she was #1 in votes and judges score this week. one of the fans of the show told me that the final callout is done randomly so we dont actually know who got the most overall score b/w Hayi and Jimin, but we can guess its most likely Hayi since she was way ahead of Jimin in the online votes, and the judges' score was in her favor.

Jimin's performance this week did not do her any favors. she tried to recapture the feelings of Over the Rainbow once again but it failed.

  6. Wahyimo......the music icons outshining the contestants is a given, and is extremely obvious. Before kpop star, these young lady's were only know by family members and a few friends at school. Why would anyone expect these unpolished, unseasoned girls to outshine other performers who have sung in front of thousands, to present a stage like a seasoned pro?....But i respect your opinion. My take on this is that, out of the 3, Hayi's 2 performances last night, were the best of all. I have to give respect to Miss A, because their performance featured Hayi in the spotlight more than GG & BB did with their contestants. At different points in the song, they moved away from Hayi, then gathered around her as if she were the lead singer, and she was. Awesome teamwork & feature-work by Miss A. In a contest, right now, 4 or 10 against 1, hayi would destroy all of Miss A & GG.....and she's only 15....

  7. I feel kind of bad for Hayi. Week after week (especially this week) the judges' comments seem to be in divergence with each other, such that Hayi would end up walking in circles if she tried to make sense of what all three judges were saying in one thought. I can't believe JYP...he wants her to make mistakes now? lol Is he not the judge who is the pickiest when it comes to the technical aspects of a performance such as pitch and notes? If my memory serves me right, did he not criticize her once for not having enough control over her note-hitting? oh my...If I were Hayi...I would be so confused. I think Hayi is extremely talented and she is perhaps one of my favorite singers in Korea (and she's only 16!); I just don't want this competition to turn her into another cookie-cutter singer. Sigh, sorry for the rant. I love your blog btw, keep up the great work.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Although I still can't believe JYP gave her 92, I kinda agree that Hayi's performance was too careful and Jimin's was just the other way around.I think he needs to learn how to convince people in a non-irritating way.

And about the special performances, I think it is true that there are as many minds as there are heads. I think Jimin's was the best as it was the closest to a real collaboration.

    ReplyDelete
  9. @kpopantz : I'm not faulting the contestants for not shining as brightly. I'm just saying that the big notes in lady marmalade was 99% done by SNSD. IN Hayi's performance she got most of the adlib (though the song really isn't about big notes anyway) so it's fine.

@Anonymous on winking: I assumed it was some sort of winking because she was smiling. I know what you mean by her squinting in previous performances, she just did this yesterday many more times than previous performances.

I get what JYP means about her not really in the song, but at the same time the score isn't right if that's his only problem with the performance, like Onsemiro said.

I thought Ji Min got the most votes because she got called 'safe' before HaYi did, and I thought the order matters.

  10. An ignorant question: I noticed her surname and her "Yi" in her name is the same character. Why is it pronounced differently? Because the placement is just different?

    ReplyDelete
  11. When I was trolling for results last night the first one I came across was a small blog entry where they said that Hayi did "some song called U-Go-Girl." I thought oh-no...please say it wasn't so. Unlike some of the posters here, I can actually tolerate that song as done by Hyori for the pop-fluff it was, but I really couldn't figure out how it would be arranged for this little 15 year old soul-singer. Overall, after watching the performance, I thought at least she didn't look scared and confused and she delivered a good all around performance. It's not probably going to make my playlist, but it was good. I also thought that the colab performances were just meh. To me it's got no chance but to be awkward when you put a relative newbie on a stage with seasoned veterans. You will either see their flaws or you won't notice them at all. I do agree that Ah Yeon's collab with Tiff and Fanny was the least complementary. The other 2 stages at least appeared to try to showcase the contestant. I didn't expect much in a week, honestly. So now it goes to the wire. Really, as much as I am rooting for Hayi, at this point, I think whichever girl wins, it will be well deserved. Thanks for the translations.

Oh and I wonder how she would handle a BMK song....

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wahyimo, in South Korea, the actual pronunciation of the the surname "이" is close to Yi, but in North Korea, it's close to Li or Lee. In Korean, a rule called "Du-eum-beop-chik" which roughly translates to "A rule that applies to an initial sound of a word" changes the pronunciation of such words as 라(ra/la), 리(ri/li), 류(ryu/lyu), 림(rim/lim),etc to 나(na), 이(yi/i), 유(yu), 임(Yim/im).

About half a century ago, Koreans didn't apply the rule to surnames so they remanized such surnames as 라(ra/la), 리(ri/li), 류(ryu/lyu), and 림(rim/lim)to Ra, Lee, Ryu, and Lim. But in South Korea, after the Korean War, they started hyper-correcting their surnames to 나(na), 이(yi/i), 유(yu), 임(Yim/im) hence ended up hyper-correcting their romanization too. Consequently, for example, the surname 이(李) now has at least three kinds of romanization - Lee, Rhee, Yi. This means in South Korea 이하이 can be spelled Lee Hayi or Rhee Hayi or Yi Hayi in English. In North Korea it'll be either Lee Hayi or Rhee Hayi. Quite confusing, right? :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Allan, I couldn't agree more! Whoever makes less mistakes in the final round will win a well-deserved title. But I'll still have my fingers crossed for Hayi!

And since Hayi's not a powerhouse voice like BMK, her rendition might be quite uniquely different.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Wahyimo, I forgot to mention that the hyper-correction happened because the surname of the name 이하이 was considered to the initial sound of the word, i.e., the full name itself was quite wrongfully considered as one word. So, in Korea, Hayi's surname is now spelled Lee or Yi and the original sound of the last word of her name is just Yi - 이(怡). 이(怡) and surname 이(李) are totally different words.

  19. Hi... First of all thanks so much for this post and the translation... I don't usually comment.. but this week I just have to show my frustration over JYP.. like isn't he the one that always says things like: "This is good but the singing was disappointing and now he's saying he wants her to sing that she will go offbeat and crack her voice.. I remember last week when Hayi sang "As Time Goes By" I thought she was singing it from her heart.. and her voice wasnt stable towards the end.. and he said like the singing was disappointing. I don't understand JYP.. Knowing Hayi she likes to please the judges and maybe will pick like a ballad song that she isn't mature enough for... I don't Im just ranting.
I like Hayi feeling comfortable and enjoying the music she's singing cuz she looks good and she sounds good. Besides knowing its the finals she has to show off what she's best at.. right now instead of exploring for more new genre she's done enough of that already and it didn't work out well..But I love Lee Hayi no matter what happens will support her constantly:) Sorry for the long post...

  21. I hear you! JYP has been criticized for acting like a spineless ankle biter and for being full of himself. They think his critique is logically incoherent because it’s inconsistent. Ironically though, JYP seems to suit Hayi's vocal style better. I think it's quite a dilemma.

  25. @Onsemiro:
Thanks for the explanation on the characters and names. he he . Looks pretty complicated to me!

It made sense that they pronounce it differently when the 'chinese' characters for the word are different. It's just I've never seen her name spelt with those characters so I assumed since Korean uses phonetic symbols they are the same. And apparently they can be the same. Learning so much from your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I just realized they changed the video ? *the one you posted in this post*. It now has the intro. Did JYP say she's a very nervous person?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wahyimo, I'm sooooo glad to know you're learning something from this blog. And the other clip was deleted from the Youtube due to copyright infringement. This one I newly embedded was uploaded by K-pop Star.
BTW, JYP was gushing over Hayi's black soul and black voice.

    ReplyDelete
  28. im confused by JYP too. Park JiMin broke down and cried during her performance this week which caused her to go off pitch and he still criticized her. if we were to go by his words to HaYi then he should have given Park JiMin a score of a 100 for getting so caught up with her emotions in the song.

i really hope HaYi doesn't take his criticism too seriously and damage her new found confidence once again.

I really don't get what hes trying to accomplish by knocking these two teenagers for weird reasons.

there is only one more week left. they are already stressed as it is. Hes only gonna end up making things worse for them.

  29. hi, I am Hayi's fan. how can I vite for her o line?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous at 10:21PM, okay, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He might have wanted Hayi to sing more expressively with feeling 'cause he thought her singing was a little too dry. And he might have wanted Jimin to control her feeling while singing 'cause he thought she was way over the top. If JYP is right, then they are examples of two extremes of nature - just as this old Chinese saying goes, "Too much is as bad as too little." What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  31. You need to have a DAUM email account to vote for Hayi. Usually you also need to have Korean SSN, but in this case, all you need is a DAUM email account - I just voted for Hayi. :)

    http://media.daum.net/entertain/showcase/kpopstar/poll

This time, Hayi and Jimin are sooooo neck and neck. Just a couple hours ago, Hayi was behind Jimin by a margin of 2 percent; but now, she's ahead by the same margin.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Im so serious about learning korean now. When Hayi wins, im signing up to learn the Korean language....you guys are absolutely right. I now see what kinda of guy JYP is. In all fairness, JYP is a perfectionist, who expects perfection, even though he doesn't always give a perfect performance when he sings....(Believe me, i've been watching several of his videos, in order to better understand him, and am sorely disappointed.)The objective to winning over JYP, is regardless of the stage you present, if you can successfully convey the emotions of the song, and end with a good climax, he'll give a good score. He's emotionally, not really, visually excite-able or pleased(as a judge...come on people.)...anyway, since i haven't learned enough korean to get a daum email, i can only hope that our little Hayi will T.C.B.(take care of business) on 4/29/2012, and win with the best performance of her life. Can't wait!...Yoon Do Hyun - **THE WINNER OF 2012 KPOPSTAR SURVIVAL EDITION FOR APRIL IS......LEE HAYI!!!!** HAYI FIGHTING....LOL

    ReplyDelete
  33. kpopantz, your comments brought a smile on my lips. Thanks for sharing and yes, I Hayily recommend learning Korean.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Onsemiro, that's exactly what I think about JYP's comment. I know he doesn't want HaYi to go cracking and tearing up, it's for them both (Ji Min and Ha Yi) to find that balance. That's what all great singers do.

However, I don't think U GO Girl is a song that needs emotion conveyed. I don't think it's a very deep song.

I think her 'LOVE' was a bit technical, but something like her For You or the song she sang on the first live episode (don't know the English name) was great emotion wise. I also think it's just because her face is blank that people think she isn't connecting with the song.

Seeing her non-singing videos I think we all can see that sometimes she spaced out. Even when she's singing she smiles at some random ,making me think like "she must be thinking of something (else) at that moment". It's almost like Amy W, though Amy's just because she's high on substance. LOL.

Although impossible, I'd love her to be able to train at JYP for singing and YG for stage act. ha ha.. She loosened up great after YG. JYP doesn't seem to teach her anything in that area, but JYP's very serious with music and has greater knowledge in soul music.

Do trainees have to pay to get training in these companies ?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Wahyimo, you took the words right out of my mouth. Maybe he expected some kind of sultry, come-hither look and attitude from Hayi with that song. ;)

  38. i think both finalists are great and i don't mind either one winning but i have a question:

b/w Hayi and Jimin, who do you think has more "commercial" appeal?

no one can deny that both are very talented but we all know that talent alone is not enough.

Personally, i like both girls but I can't help but feel that Hayi has more commercial appeal than Jimin.

Hayi has shown her ability to sing uptempo music as well as slow ballads. she has shown a very good ability to digest pop songs as well as rock ballads. she also has the look and charisma of a star. what she lacks, she will make up for it with experience.

Jimin's voice is wonderful but she has been unable to sing anything outside of her comfort zone of peaceful ballads.

the problem ballads right now are not selling as well as uptempo or midtempo songs. unless of course the ballad is something outside of this world.

this makes me wonder whether Jimin is ready for winning the show and debuting instantly.

  40. TA TA, I just posted a how-to. Hope it helps.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anonymous at 2:49AM,in my humble opinion, Jimin has two major problems to overcome. One, she's got problems explaining what the lyrics are about when she signs Korean "Gayo" as she grew up in the Philippines.(I'm not sure where she was born.) None of her renditions of quintessential Korean music has touched my "Korean" heart yet. Two, although everyone knows she's got a powerhouse of voice, her singing kind of bores me - don't get me wrong here. I have no intention to bash her or anything. I'm not saying that Jimin's got no mass or commercial appeal though. It's probably just me 'cause she (and also Hayi) has a huge fan base already.

While I think any of them deserves to win, I don't think either of them is ready to debut instantly after winning for they still have much room to improve. I know SBS will financially support and help the winner of this competition put out her debut album, but I think that can wait as the prize money won't vanish.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Let me know if you still have any problem registering.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's painfully obvious that neither of these young ladies are ready to debut immediately after this show ends.

It's the SBS TV Network corporate figure heads, who are behind the pressure, "accelerating the gas" to see these children....(let's remember that) debut, just so they can promote the fact that "they debuted their first album with us". "Here at SBS, we promote only korea's best talent"....selfish, unforgiving, and absolutely ridiculous!!!

You don't have to tell BOA,YG & JYP, they're not ready, they've exposed that already thru their various training methods. For this reason, was BOA crying, after Ji Min's performance - "the pressure of being a star"...

Lastly, Wahyimo talked about Hayi spacing out. This is what Lee Michelle was referring to when she said that Hayi, in certain areas of her personility & life, was silly & naive. She's just 15 (September 1996, by the western aging methods), and doesn't have an emotion a proper response for something she doesn't know or hasn't experienced. Innocence, and blissfulness, is a beautiful thing, but must be protected, an properly guided. If mislead, and perverted, it makes people unconscious, and turns them into the worst kind.....(Her innocence reminds of myself, at that age, once i realized how people were trying to influence me, against my own will, i learned how to fight against it)i can only hope she is that fortunate. I would love to show her parents how to do that...if they don't know already...LOL

  50. kpopantz, I feel caught off guard - quite a pleasant surprise though. Hmm... At first I felt a little iffy about Jimin singing Mercy because of the song's genre - soul. But on second thought, she'll probably prove me wrong as she did great with Adele's "Rolling in the Deep,' which Hayi's gonna sing this Sunday. I'm feeling a little worried about Hayi as well because of the song's high note. I hope she proves me wrong too. Good luck, girls!

    ReplyDelete
  51. OMG! Totally YG's idea.
    :|
I'm not sure I'm happy about this. It's going to be fanwar and forced comparisons.

They will probably change the key though, like JiMin will sing in a higher key .

Most fans rave about how high can you go.

I hope HaYi totally breaks down the song and rebuild it. Change the rythm, even. Avoid the direct comparison because JiMin's clear voice is very suitable for the higher long notes in Rolling in the Deep.

But what do I know anyway.

    Cross fingers!

  53. Onsemiro. I am just worried about Hayi too. Because Jimin expressed her feeling very well while she sang "Rolling in the Deep". Hayi does not show her feeling easily. I don't worry much about song's high note. Hayi will sing this song on her way.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Wahyimo, from another angle, not a few fans of the show itself have expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision. They say the show should've been named "Pop Star," not "K-pop Star." And this has been exactly my thoughts all along. How many Korean songs has Jimin sung so far? And now both of the finalists are going to sing "Pop songs" (which means American/British music). In this vein, the title of the show truly sounds absurd and inappropriate.

  58. TA TA, I hear you. I just logged onto the computer to check the result of the competition and I'm feeling quite frustrated too. But I gotta go now and I'll be back around 6 pm central US time to post a translation of the judges' comments (and my thoughts).

  59. Hello Onsemiro!I cannot wait to read your reviews:) I absolutely loved Hayi's singing in the killing me softly song! It took some time for her version of rolling in the deep to grow on me though. Nevertheless, she looked gorgeous in the finals:)

  60. Oh dear, I felt sad and cant figure out why Hayi lost. I thought she would win. When I first saw her sang the first song, gees it is one of my favorate. My guess is the song is too easy for her. And I thought she sang better than PJM.
Onsemiro, can u figure out why she lost, woooo...weeee, nooooh!

  61. Dear Onsemiro.. while looking forward to your translation. I went to view the judges marks. I am quite sure Hayi lost because of JYP, and I think I am right especially for her first song. JYP gave her the lowest! He is really anti-climax. So sad.. but I am glad that Hayi was putting up smiling face though she had lost. Can you translate what YG commented at the very last part..?
In fact(before the finals), I was telling my two girls that if Hayi can't please JYP, she might lost as JYP always give her lowest marks even she sang much better than others. Why he like that???

  62. Oh, Hayi lost 4 point because of JYP, something is wrong here. I strongly feel that BoA and YG are much more fair in their judging unlike JYP.

  63. YG said Hayi is the number one in his heart even though she finished second tonight. He really seemed to care about her and think highly of her talent.

  66. oksana, it's all a matter of personal preference and no doubt Jimin is a good singer. No offense intended to Jimin fans; we're just venting. ;)
